Oman hails Egypt election outcome

His Majesty congratulates Morsi — MUSCAT — His Majesty Sultan Qaboos has sent a cable of congratulations to Dr Mohammed Morsi, President of Egypt, on the occasion of his victory in the presidential elections. His Majesty the Sultan expressed his sincere greetings to the new Egyptian president wishing him good health, happiness and a long life, and praying to the Almighty to grant him success in leading the brotherly Egyptian people towards further progress, prosperity and stability. He hoped that brotherly relations between the two countries will continue to grow and prosper.

Meanwhile, the Sultanate, represented by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, issued a statement here yesterday on the developments witnessed by Egypt. The statement reads as follows: “The Sultanate of Oman follows with keen interest the developments being witnessed by the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt. “The Sultanate, while it welcomes the outcome of the presidential elections and expresses its respect for the choice of the brotherly Egyptian people within the context of their democratic march, it hopes that all efforts will collaborate and focus on ensuring stability, fraternity and co-operation among all sectors within the framework of the joint national objective of achieving the supreme interests of the country, as well as security, stability, decent life and development sought by the Egyptian people”.

Morsi, who ran against Ahmed Shafiq, won 51.73 per cent of the vote. “The winner of the election for Egyptian president on June 16-17 is Mohamed Morsi Eissa al Ayat,” said head of the electoral commission Faruq Sultan. Morsi won with 13,230,131 votes against Shafiq’s 12,347,380, Sultan said. The election, in which more than 50 million voters were eligible to cast their ballot, saw a 51.8 per cent turnout. — ONA/AFP
