ROP arrests 4 for fraud

Thu, 12 July 2012

MUSCAT — The Directorate-General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigation at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) arrested four people charged with fraud.
The defendants hired cars from citizens and later spirited the cars out of the country. The charged are being investigated by the Public Prosecution and they will appear before court.
The criminals had opened a car hire office at Seeb after they obtained a commercial register. They convinced their clients to take their cars on rent against tantalising sums of money if they gave their consent to the office to hire the cars outside the Sultanate for tourism and commercial purposes.
Being convinced, the clients issued authorisation to the office agents to take the cars out of the country via land ports. The miscreants signed contracts with the clients and handed them cheques with sums equal to the car value payable after two or three years from the date of taking the car.
Lieutenant Colonel Saif al Maamari said the Directorate-General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigation launched the investigation a short time after receiving information about it.
