MUSCAT — Habta markets, or pre-Eid souqs coinciding with the
26th of Ramadhan were held in a number of wilayats in the Sultanate as part of common economic activities during this time of the year.
Many of those who frequent the open market places look for items to celebrate Eid al Fitr, notably halwa, readymade wear, toys, cosmetics and handicraft items. Livestock is also highly sought and the big demand caused a hike in prices, with a head of cattle fetching RO 800, sheep between RO 80 and RO 130 and goats between RO 70 and RO 110.
Types of popular fish like kingfish, tuna and sahwa were also in low display and this caused prices to go up. A kilogramme of kingfish sought RO 5 and sahwa RO 5-6.
