Impure food items pulled out of shops

Tue, 05 March 2013

MUSCAT — The Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources conducted a number of lab tests on different types of foodstuff which proved some items not fit for consumption. The directorate has issued a list of these products and circulated it to all the directorates in the Sultanate. The list included a variety of Indian red sugar which is found to be impure and has foul smell, even insects mixed in it. The product has been withdrawn from the markets and discarded.

The list also included a Bahrain type of spices named Al Ameer in 300-gram packets. The level of fungus and ferments are above permissible limits in this product, which has also been removed from stalls and discarded. Three more items produced/processed by a company called Ittihad al Nojjom Company were found not fit for consumption. The products were identified as Vivay cups, (orange colour) and Ice MM (mixed fruits), which were withdrawn and discarded. — ONA
