Caution urged over currency sale

Tue, 24 April 2012

MUSCAT — Royal Oman Police yesterday cautioned citizens and foreigners against selling and purchasing currencies from non-licensed banking institutions except the ones approved by the Central Bank of Oman. Col Mohammed bin Khalfan al Daghishi, Assistant Director-General of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, said that a number of notifications have been registered about some citizens and expatriates who have been victims of fraud. They agreed to purchase counterfeit or expired or outdated money against real money.
They later discovered that they have been victims of fraud. Many victims have pointed out that they have paid money to get these currencies. The official affirmed that the counterfeit money cases are among the most dangerous cases as they have a negative impact on the national economy. As per the Omani Penal Law, all those involved in producing or circulating counterfeit money will be subject to harsh penalties.
ROP urges everyone to notify against anyone or groups that may be involved in circulating such currencies. ROP also calls on everyone to deal only with the licensed banking institutions to avoid being legally accountable. — ONA
