OUTLOOK — Abdulaziz Al Jahdhami — Nobody can deny the fact that Oman is one of the rich countries in the region with splendid natural and archaeological attractions which obviously portray the country’s environmental diversity. The geological diversity of the Sultanate’s landscapes as well as its unique and strategic location on the south-east of Arabian Peninsula confers it with a breathtaking environment. These special characteristics make Oman one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the Middle East.
Oman is well-known for its rich diversity of landscapes ranging from rocky mountains and wadis to striking golden dunes and desert, green hills and spectacular beaches. It is also gifted with a rich biodiversity especially its marine and wildlife. The varied geography of the Sultanate resulted in a wide variety of climatic conditions. This distinguishes it from other countries in the region.
Despite all the environmental blessings we have in the country, many people ignore the value of the environmental diversity that help offering a healthy living atmosphere for human beings and other species as well. There are many careless individuals and private establishments which pay no attention to the concept of environment conservation. Irresponsibly, they pollute the environment just for the sake of making profit in their businesses and for personal advantages.
I just wonder how inhuman are they when they destroy the natural riches in order to satisfy their needs or to establish their own commercial projects. As an example, the Bausher sand grabbers are one of those who adversely exploited the natural treasures for their own good. They wipe out the beauty of the golden sand dunes which mark a natural attraction in that area.
Fishermen, as another example, also contribute in polluting the sea which is one of the most significant natural resources. They are considered one of the major players who cause water pollution through their careless behaviour while going on fishing trips. Spilling oil and leftovers in the sea certainly affect the marine life.
Preserving the environment should be given top priority not only by the authorities, but by all individuals in the society. Preserving the environment and its valuable resources is a social responsibility, and that each one of us ought to contribute to its preservation.
The government has always placed environment conservation at the forefront in order to safeguard and maintain a sustainable environment in Oman. Since the beginning of the blessed Omani Renaissance, His Majesty accorded special attention and care to the protection of Omani environment. He urged all people in the country to help in preserving the natural resources.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs is always very keen to promote environmental awareness and enhance the concepts and requirements for dealing with the environment and climate affairs at all levels. It strives to support the principles of sustainable development through managing, following up implementation, and evaluation of the climatic affairs. It also spares no efforts to ensure the safety of the environment and fighting pollution.
Oman with its environmental diversity marks a perfect tourist destination for explorers, geologists and travel lovers. Thus, preserving the natural wonders and treasures of our environment is a must and a collective responsibility of citizens and residents alike. Everyone should share the burden of preserving the environment of Oman.
