Huge rush for nominations

Municipal Council elections — Citizens who meet the requirements stated in the law are requested to submit their applications to the wali’s office — MUSCAT — Omani citizens in all wilayats at different governorates yesterday began submitting applications to contest for the membership of the Municipal Councils. The application period runs till May 30 at all walis’ offices.
Dr Shihab bin Ahmed al Jabri, Adviser to the Interior Minister for Legal Affairs, said that the first day witnessed a great turnout of candidates.
He called on citizens who meet the requirements stated in Article No 8 of the Municipal Councils Law to submit their applications to the wali’s office in the wilayat he/she would like to nominate for. As per the statement issued by the interior minister, the nominations will run up to May 30.
Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidy, Interior Minister, has issued a statement about classifications of the wilayats for the election of Municipal Councils’ members.
As per the provision of Article No 6 of the Municipal Councils Law issued by Royal Decree No 116/2011, which included determining the number of elected members/representatives of each wilayat according to their population, are as follows:
The wilayats whose population is not more than 30,000 citizens, will be represented at the Municipal Council with two members; the wilayats with a population of not more than 30,000, will be represented by four members and the wilayats whose population is more than 60,000, will be represented by six members.
As per the estimates of the Omani population, as published by the respective departments and in preparation for the election of the Municipal Councils in the governorates, the number of elected Municipal Council members at each governorate will be as follows: Governorate of Muscat: Wilayat of Muscat 2, Wilayat of Muttrah 4, Wilayat of Al Amerat 4, Wilayat of Baushar 6, Wilayat of Seeb 6 and Wilayat of Quriyat 4. Total will be 26.
Governorate of Dhofar: Wilayat of Salalah 6, Wilayat of Taqah 2, Wilayat of Mirbat 2, Wilayat of Rakhyut 2, Wilayat of Thumrait 2, Wilayat of Dhalkut 2, Wilayat of Al Mazyounah 2, Wilayat of Maqshan 2, Wilayat of Shaleem and Halaniyat Islands 2 and the Wilayat of Sadah 2. Total 24.
Governorate of Musandam: Wilayat of Khasab 2, Wilayat of Diba 2, Wilayat of Bukha 2 and the Wilayat of Madha 2. Total 8 members. Governorate of Al Buraimi: Wilayat of Al Buraimi 4, Wilayat of Madha 2 and the Wilayat of Al Sinaina 2. Total 8 members. Governorate of Dakhiliyah: Wilayat of Nizwa 6, Wilayat of Bahla 4, Wilayat of Manah 2, Wilayat of Al Hamra 2, Wilayat of Adam 2, Wilayat of Izki 4, the Wilayat of Samayil 4 and the Wilayat of Bidbid 2. Total 26.
Governorate of North Al Batinah: Wilayat of Sohar 6, Wilayat of Shinas 4, Wilayat of Liwa 2, Wilayat of Saham 6, Wilayat of Al Khabourah 4 and the Wilayat of Suwaiq 6. Total 28 members.
Governorate of South Al Batinah: Wilayat of Rustaq 6, Wilayat of Al Awabi 2, Wilayat of Nakhl 2, Wilayat of Wadi al Maawel 2, Wilayat of Barka 6 and the Wilayat of Al Musannah 4. Total 22.
Governorate of South Sharqiyah: Wilayat of Sur 6, Wilayat of Al Kamil W’al Wafi 2, Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan 2, Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali 4 and the Wilayat of Masirah 2. Total 16.
Governorate of North Sharqiyah: Wilayat of Ibra 2, Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi 6, Wilayat of Bidiyah 2, Wilayat of Al Qabil 2, Wilayat of Wadi Bani Khalid 2 and the Wilayat of Dima W’attayeen 2. Total 16.
Governorate of Dhahirah: Wilayat of Ibri 6, Wilayat of Yanqul 2 and the Wilayat of Dhank 2. Total 10 members.
Governorate of Al Wusta: Wilayat of Haima 2, Wilayat of Mahout 2, Wilayat of Duqm 2 and the Wilayat of Al Jazir 2. Total 8 members. — ONA
