Oman handballers enter semis at Asian Beach Games

MUSCAT — Oman's prospect of winning a medal in the third Asian Beach Games being organised in Chinese city of Haiyang was brightened when their handball team entered the last four stage of the championship, posting victories over Kuwait and Pakistan in contrasting fashion.
According to information received here, while it was an easy 2-0 (18-15, 19-16) victory for Oman against Kuwait, the Sultanate boys had a tough time edging past a strong Pakistan 2-1.
For Oman, Hani al Dughaishi was on target on eight occasions while Mahmood al Harthy and Said Hamad scored six and four goals each respectively in the first game.
The match against Pakistan was more interesting with Hisham al Wahaibi slamming four goals in the opening game while Nasser Tamtami scored six goals.
The Oman squad, who are being coached by Egyptian Wael Abdelatty, comprises Jaber al Yaqoob, Nasser Tamtami, Moosa al Dughaishi, Hani al Dughaishi, Said Hamad, Assad al Hassani, Hisham al Wahaibi, Mahmood al Harthy and Mazen al Dughaishi.
Meanwhile, in the day's other matches, Qatar defeated China and Bahrain.
Earlier, Oman soccer team were eliminated on Tuesday following their defeat to Palestine. In the volleyball event the Omani ‘A’ team were knocked out from the competition following their 0-2 loss to a Kazakhstan team.
