Super Cup: A giant leap for Omani football

By Shail Vaidya –
MUSCAT — A lot of people in Oman were talking about the Super Cup yesterday, the one between Bayern Munich and Chelsea, Guardiola vs Mourinho they said, rivals as managers, each with a point to prove, it had its own story, it was more than a game. However, if you’re looking for a game with an intense story and a point to prove, then the people of Oman need nothing more than today’s Super Cup clash between Suwaiq Club and Fanja Club at Seeb Stadium.
Super Cup’s essentially in football are curtain raisers to the season and this curtain raiser is bigger than most for Omani football. It is the curtain raiser to the new era of the fully professional league known as the Oman Professional League (OPL). As long as everything goes well, the coming season can be an important milestone for Omani football and should go a long way in enabling it to gain every further success. In fact, the launch of the OPL and its logo is scheduled to happen soon after the match today and there is a lot of excitement surrounding its launch.
The two teams involved — Suwaiq SC and Fanja SC — are arguably the strongest currently in Oman football.
Fanja will be out to prove their mettle against Suwaiq, who took both the Omantel League title as well as the HM Cup last season. The league title however, was won under extraordinary circumstances as both teams finished level and the shield was awarded by virtue of a play-off between the two teams which Suwaiq won to claim the league title.
It is certain that when Fanja step onto that pitch to inaugurate the 2013-14 season, they will feel they are a trophy short from the league last season and will look to avenge that by claiming the Super Cup as their redemption.
It has been a strong renaissance for a club with so much in terms of history and expectation that they will be very eager to add every trophy they can after their 20-year trophy drought that ended with them becoming league champions for the 2011-12 season.
The Super Cup also offers both teams a chance to make a statement of intent for both clubs and all eyes will be on the match to see how both these top teams from last season have prepared for the coming season and will offer a lot of insights as to what is the sort of spirit and strategy with which they will proceed for the coming season.
It is going to be a story of redemption, a story of new and exciting beginnings and the fight for the very first trophy of Oman’s first season of fully professional club football, there’s a lot up for grabs tonight.
Fanja Club have a point to prove, both of them have a statement to make and Oman football takes its step to the next level, I don’t think an Omani football fan can ask for a more exciting match from this edition of the Super Cup to be held at Seeb Stadium today evening. It isn’t only going to be about who wins, because this time the Super Cup isn’t only one trophy for one of the two sides, but one giant leap for Omani football.
